Filipino wins in int’l guitar competition

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino guitarist Ramoncito Carpio emerged as top winner in the 2011 Philippine International Guitar Competition held last January 30 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).
He bested 7 other participants from Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines
Thai guitarist Hitoshi Miyashita won 2nd prize, while Japanese guitarist Takashi Endo placed 3rd.
Arthur Erskine Basilio was named Best Filipino guitarist.
This is not the first time Carpio won in a contest. He bagged the 2nd prize in the 2009 National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA) for the guitar category, and 3rd prize in the 2009 Bangkok Guitar Festival and Competition.
A graduate of the UP College of Music where he majored in guitar, Carpio won a Yuichi Imai model guitar, trophy, cash prize of $800, concert engagements in the Philippines and Thailand, and musical products at the 2011 Philippine International Guitar Competition.
The competition was judged by a distinguished panel of concert guitarists and luthiers from the Czech Republic, Germany, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and the Philippines, represented by Filipino concert guitarist Michael Dadap.
The 2011 Philippine International Guitar Festival and Competition was organized by Guitar Friends and the CCP.
